Endogenous superantigens shape response to exogenous superantigens.

Endogenous superantigen-mediated thymic negative selection resulted in a paucity of mature T cells bearing T-cell receptor (TCR) Vbeta8 in the periphery. Consequently, the magnitude of immune response to exogenous superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B, which activates TCR Vbeta8(+) T cells, was significantly reduced and conferred protection from superantigen-induced mortality.

A Review on Superantigens

Superantigens are microbial products which are immunostimulatory and disease causing. They stimulate a large fraction of T cells unlike conventional antigens. These superantigens include various staphylococcal enterotoxins, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome toxins, viral proteins etc. The superantigen family comprise of proteins that range from 22-29 kDa in size and highly resistant to proteas...

Staphylococcal enterotoxin microbial superantigens.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins are a family of structurally related proteins that are produced by Staphylococcus aureus. In addition to their role in the pathogenicity of food poisoning, these microbial superantigens have profound effects on the immune system, which makes them useful tools for understanding its mechanism of action. These molecules (24-30 kDa) are highly hydrophilic and exhibit low...

Pregledni znanstveni članek SUPERANTIGENS

Superantigens are bacterial, viral, retroviral and some naturally occurring proteins that can specifically activate a large proportion of T and/or B cells. In contrast to classical peptide antigen recognition, superantigens do not require processing to small peptides. T-cell superantigens interact with the immune system by binding to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II proteins outs...

Virus-encoded superantigens.

Superantigens are microbial agents that have a strong effect on the immune response of the host. Their initial target is the T lymphocyte, but a whole cascade of immunological reactions ensues. It is thought that the microbe engages the immune system of the host to its own advantage, to facilitate persistent infection and/or transmission. In this review, we discuss in detail the structure and f...
